How to make your English vocabulary learning more focused
If your job involves an aspect related to international trade, for example, it is likely that you will need to use English and possibly other languages in order to communicate with your customers and /or suppliers. If there is terminology and concepts in English that you do not know, you can improve your learning by ensuring what you learn is Relevant, Appropriate and Significant.
Relevant
Develop your understanding of language which is relevant to the needs of your job and your sector.
If, for example, you work in the logistics department of a manufacturing company, your priority should be to interact with information in English which is most relevant to your job such as understanding packaging regulations and completing the relevant import or export documentation in English.
Appropriate
Learn the language and skills which are appropriate for your professional context. If you have limited time, it´s important to focus your attention on developing your understanding of topics which will help you to communicate in English in your work situation.
Depending on your role, you may not need to know how to explain in English all of the potential sources of finance which companies may seek in order to trade internationally.
Significant
Make new language significant by making connections between what you already know with the new pieces of information. It is easier to store and then to retrieve at a later date a word or expression from memory, if is significant for us in some way. Finding examples where the new words and expressions are used is a useful way of helping to make the language more significant.
If for example, you are investigating ways you can protect the intellectual property of your products, it is useful to find examples written in English about other companies in your sector that have protected their products. Through the process of reading and comparing and contrasting with your own situation, this should help to make the language more significant for you.
The most important language to focus on initially is language related to the areas of your business that you need to know about in English and to develop the skills through which you can communicate these aspects in English with confidence.
